About

"A developed country is not one where the poor have cars. It's where the rich use public transportation."

- Enrique Penalosa, former mayor of Bogota

We all know that healthy, modern cities need healthy, modern public transportation systems. And municipalities all across the province are taking significant steps towards more sustainable and efficient ways of people-moving.

But in Hamilton, we're lagging behind. Hamilton has by far the slowest growing transit system of large cities in Ontario and its ridership has actually decreased within 4 of the last 7 years. The national average has seen a 22% increase in ridership since 2006.

Environment Hamilton believes that smart investment in excellent public transit is fundamental to building the kind of vibrant city that we all want; and the kind of sustainable city that future generations need.

City Council has recognized this. Councillors regularly voice their commitment to first-class and user-friendly public transit. And they've commissioned numerous staff reports showing us just how to get there. Yet, for a quarter century, City Council has refused to increase transit funding or take any meaningful steps towards an improved and expanded transit system.

Hamilton's 2015 capital budget deliberations are expected to run into April this year. Before that process is complete, Environment Hamilton is challenging Councillors to get on the bus and experience the transit system that they've been charged with improving.

All of the funds raised by this campaign will be used by Environment Hamilton in partnership with social welfare agencies and groups in the community exclusively for the purpose of assisting low-income Hamiltonians use the HSR.
